THE POST March 7, 2013
The Walkerton Kinsmen Club is joining forces with Eastlink to once again fill the Walkerton jail with music.
The second annual Jailhouse Rock event, presented by Eastlink, will be held Saturday, Sept. 14 inside the walled courtyard of the former jail.
“We are thrilled to welcome Eastlink as our title sponsor,” said concert chair Wayne Holman. “Plans are well underway for our second annual Jailhouse Rock and we couldn’t be more pleased to have Eastlink partner with us.”
The County of Bruce recently gave permission to the Kinsmen to use the former jail on the Sept. 14 concert date. Because the facility is for sale and its future is unknown, Holman said those wanting a look inside should buy their tickets early.
“We had a great turnout for our first concert last year, and we think a big part of that had to do with the jail itself. Anybody who didn’t make it out in 2012 should plan on coming this year because we’re going to put on a great show and it may be the last chance for people to get inside those walls,” he said.
In 2012, Jailhouse Rock raised over $13,000 for the Walkerton & District Hospital Foundation. Proceeds from this year’s concert will also be donated to charity.
“This concert is a significant event for the community and we are happy to be working with the Kinsmen Club to ensure it’s a memorable day,” said Eastlink’s Marc Serre.
Jailhouse Rock will feature six live bands performing everything from rock to Celtic to folk. Stella, a Canadian rock band playing classic and top 40s music, is headlining the concert along with the Mudmen, a Celtic rock group, and Almost Hip, a popular tribute band to the Tragically Hip. The event will also include tributes to John Mellencamp, Elton John and Billy Joel, and local talent The Castros, playing folk/rock music.
“This line-up is going to put on an amazing show. Nobody is going to leave the concert disappointed,” said Holman.
Early bird tickets are on sale April 1 at various locations in Walkerton. For more information, please visit www.jailhouserock.ca.
